chapter 2

They stepped out of the apartment complex; they stood for a brief moment and just watched the cars speed by noisily. Then they walked quickly down the boulevard, the sounds of the city rang around them. “So where are we going?” George asked finally “a friend of mine”Sid replied” one of my connections, if you will. We’re gonna get this sorted out”. George was reassured for the time being so he picked up his pace. A cop car turned the corner toward them so he grabbed George and they ducked into an office building.
Sid hated the look of office cubicles. So clean, so sterile, so impersonal just white walls and a white ceiling. He started to shake violently at the realization that he used to work here. ”Oh hello Sid” the secretary said “Are you feeling better yet?” Sid slowly started dawning on the fact that he still works there. “Oh I’m sorry, no, a friend died I need some time” he said after he controlled his shaking, then he strolled casually out of the building.
“you work there?” George asked, he seemed truly surprised “yeah, I’m just shit-packed with surprises” Sid replied angrily, his mood had gone south real quick “let’s just go, shake a leg asshole”. They walked down about eight more blocks and turned into an alley. The alley itself got darker and darker until it was pitch black. They walked through it for what seemed like miles until they finally saw a group of homeless huddled around a flaming trash can.
There was about five of them in all, there was something other-worldly about their existence, how in this day and age there could still be homeless blew George away. Sid on the other hand treated them like they were old friends “my acquaintance here has a problem” he stated plainly. ”yeah, what kind of problem?” the beardiest one asked, “well, see, he killed a man, we need it taken care of” Sid said, as tactfully as possible “we were hoping you could help” “well, what’s in it for us?” “I’ll give you a sandwich” “done!” the conversation went by in what seemed like an instant. “get us all a sandwich” said a man in the back, after a moment” will do, Douglas”. They turned around “see ya, Sid, see ya George” “wait, how’d he know my name?” George asked apprehensively “they know a good many things, my boy” they continued through the alley back toward civilization.
